Why IPTV buffers, and how to fix it

Buffering is the spinning wheel that pauses a stream while it catches up. It is the most common IPTV complaint, and most of the time the cause is in the home rather than at the server: the Wi-Fi, the router, or a streaming stick running out of memory.

Work through these in order. The first few take seconds; stop as soon as the picture holds.

First, find out where the problem is

Change to a different channel. If every channel buffers, the problem is your connection or your device. If only one does, that stream is struggling: try it again in a few minutes, or pick another quality version of the same channel if the list has one.

Quick fixes, under a minute

Switch channel and back. This restarts the stream.
Close the app fully and reopen it.
Restart the device. Unplug it for ten seconds, or on a Firestick hold Select and Play/Pause together for about five seconds.

Fix the connection

Restart the router by unplugging it for thirty seconds. This clears most slowdowns.
Use a wired Ethernet connection if you can, or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. A Firestick tucked behind a TV often gets a weak signal; the short HDMI extender that comes in the box moves it into the open.
Run a speed test on the TV device itself, not your phone. For 4K you want a steady 20 Mbps or more per screen; HD needs much less.
Pause big downloads, game updates and cloud backups on other devices while you watch.

Free up the device

Streaming sticks have little memory, and a full one struggles.

On a Firestick, open Settings, then Applications, then Manage Installed Applications, choose your player and select Clear cache. Choose Clear cache, not Clear data: clearing data signs you out.
Uninstall apps you no longer use.
Keep your player app updated. Updates often improve playback.

Check the settings people miss

Too many screens at once. If more devices are streaming than your plan allows, the extra ones cut out, so check who else is watching.
Match the quality to your connection. If 4K stutters, pick the HD version of the channel.
Buffer size. Some players let you raise it in their settings. A bigger buffer takes a second longer to start but rides out small dips.
